Experience research - study group from the Münchner Bildungswerk visits the BMC

November 28, 2023

As part of the new study series "München - Stadt.Leben.Studieren." by the Münchner Bildungswerk, the senior citizens' academy visited the Biomedical Center on November 23. A varied program of guided tour, lectures and lab visits gave the 20 participants a broad insight into research at the BMC.

Along the artworks in the building, which depict the main areas of research at the BMC in an abstract manner, the participants got to know the building and the BMC's mission of connecting researchers and bridging the gap between basic research and clinical application. The clinical relevance of research at the BMC was underlined by Professor Lena Burbulla's presentation on Parkinson's disease. She explored the questions of what happens in patients' brains, how tremors develop and what therapeutic approaches are available.

Professor Peter Becker shed light on the fundamental mechanisms of life in his lecture "Genothek - how genes are managed in the cell nucleus". With impressive examples and comparisons, he gave the audience a new perspective on processes in cells and the significance of mutations.

Finally, a visit to the Core Facilities Bioimaging and Proteomics gave the participants a direct insight into high-tech lab work. The heads of the Core Facilities, Dr. Steffen Dietzel and Professor Axel Imhof, demonstrated current techniques and explained which research questions can be answered with them.

"As a participant, I felt very lucky to have top researchers and even a winner of the Leibniz Prize - the highest science prize awarded in Germany - as lecturers at the Münchner Bildungswerk. It doesn't get any better than this," summed up one of the participants at the end of the event.
