Soapbox Science Munich 2020

Soapbox Science” is an initiative to increase visibility of current research by women in science all around the world and offers a novel public outreach platform.

This year, two BMC scientists got up on their soap boxes and contributed to the Munich event on 27/28 June: Janet Tait, who is doing her PhD in Ralph Rupp’s lab, and Dr. Tanima Bose from the Institute of Clinical Neuroimmunology (now at the Institute for Stroke and Dementis Research of the LMU).

The Munich event, taking place since 2018, usually transforms Odeonsplatz in the city center to a public speaking "corner", reminiscent of Speaker's Corner in London's Hyde Park, and requires speakers to communicate their research to their layperson audience in a very direct and engaging manner. This year, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the event indoors and online. The interesting and entertaining talks of 14 talented women scientists working in Munich can be viewed on Youtube:

Live-stream Sunday event (28 June): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGXbfYMPwQU&t

Especially watch out for Janet’s presentation “Common threads: A journey through embryonic development with the strange-footed frog” on the Sunday event video (starting at 00:25:15) and for Tanima’s presentation “Electrical thoughts of the cells: expect the unexpected” on the Saturday event video (starting at 01:06:20).
