Groundbreaking ceremony for subway extension

On February 6, Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder and other representatives from politics and the project team broke ground for the subway station on Campus Martinsried. From 2027, subway line U6 will connect the Campus with other Munich centers of science in Garching, Maxvorstadt, Ludwigvorstadt and Großhadern.

32 years after the first considerations about extending subway line U6, the construction site for the new stop on Campus Martinsried was inaugurated yesterday with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. "Good things come to those who wait," stressed Planegg's Mayor Hermann Nafziger in his welcoming address to the approximately 200 guests. Bavaria's Minister President Dr. Markus Söder spoke of a "great leap into Bavaria's future", as the "future lies in science and research".

Minister of Science Markus Blume emphasized: "A line from excellence to excellence: With the extension of the U6 science line, we are connecting the research centers at Garching with the Life Science Campus in Martinsried, which is unique in Europe. This is a key step for the future of research in and around Munich and the entire high-tech state of Bavaria. Because science needs networking - in all respects." The importance of the new subway station for public transportation was underlined by Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter: "Today, we are sending a clear signal for the expansion and future viability of Munich's public transportation system."

According to the Ministry of Transport, the first subway trains will roll on the one-kilometer-long extension line between Klinikum Großhadern and Martinsried in 2027. The project is being financed by the federal government, the state of Bavaria, the district of Munich and the municipality of Planegg. The total cost of the project is around 212 million euros.
