GSCN 2022 Publication of the Year Award goes to BMC team

Dr. Adam C. O’Neill, Dr. Fatma Uzbas, Giulia Antognolli and Florencia Merino as well as Prof. Dr. Magdalena Götz receive
the "GSCN 2022 Publication of the Year Award" for their joint publication "Spatial centrosome proteome of human neural cells uncovers disease-relevant heterogeneity" in the journal Science. The prize is awarded by the German Stem Cell Network (GSCN).

As a central cell organelle the centrosome is responsible, among other things, for the organization of the cytoskeleton and cell division. Dysfunction of the human centrosome is associated with many neurodevelopmental disorders. Until now, it was assumed that the centrosome was very similar in all cells due to its general tasks. In their study, however, Magdalena Götz's team found that centrosomes vary more than assumed depending on the cell type.

The analysis also revealed new associations with malformations in the brain and showed why a mutation in a protein that is present in all body cells only causes malformations in the brain - because only there it is at the centrosome.

The award was presented on September 15 at the GSCN Conference 2022 in Münster. Dr. Fatma Uzbas gave the award lecture and received prize that is endowed with 1,500 €.

More information about the publication in the news release of June, 17.
