BMC meets school

March 28, 2023

A group of pupils from the Hochrhein Seminar for Mathematics and Natural Sciences swapped the classroom for the BMC labs for a day.

The timetable for the twelve pupils from grades 11-13 included a guided tour of the BMC, a seminar with Peter Becker and visits to the Core Facilities Bioimaging and Proteomics. Above all, there was lots of time for the pupils' questions - and they had plenty. From the basics of molecular biology to the question of whether it will ever be possible to cure Alzheimer's disease, a wide variety of topics and aspects of biomedical research were explored. Special highlights of the visit were the view into the cell interior by means of high-resolution fluorescence microscopy and the tour of the mass spectrometers including the pipetting robot.

The Hochrhein Seminar for Mathematics and Natural Sciences promotes highly able students in mathematics and natural sciences at the high schools in the district Waldhut (Baden-Wuerttemberg). In addition to study groups, the program also offers a lecture series and study trips, one of which took the pupils to Munich and the BMC this year.
