Help for Ukraine - BMC community collects donations in kind

18 well-filled moving boxes, 10 smaller boxes and several bags - the response to his appeal for donations was much greater than Steffen Dietzel, head of the Core Facility Bioimaging, had expected.

Two weeks ago, he had the idea to set up collection boxes at the BMC for donations in kind for Ukraine. "I had packed up a few things at home to donate and wanted to take them to the collection point of the Munich Helps Ukraine charity association," Dietzel says. "Then it occurred to me that maybe many people at BMC also have things at home they'd like to donate, but not everyone has the opportunity to drive to the collection point." He thus emailed the BMC community and distributed with support from the divisions and institutes moving boxes in the department kitchens. They quickly filled up with winter clothing, hygiene items, food, tools and more.

In the end, so much came together that two trips with a fully loaded car to the collection point were required. There, volunteers from the association sort the items, pack them on pallets and transport them on 26th December to a central collection center in Ukraine, from where they are further distributed to all regions.

"We don't know where exactly our donations will go, but we know that for some Ukrainians they will make the winter a little less harsh," the initiator of the collection campaign notes in a thank-you letter to the BMC colleagues.

Munich Helps Ukraine is a non-profit charity association that supports people in Ukraine with donations in kind and money. It is backed by the initiative of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and over a thousand volunteers.
