BMC visiting scientist Keisuke Goda receives Philipp Franz von Siebold Prize

This year's Philipp Franz von Siebold Award goes to Keisuke Goda for his work in the field of biomedical engineering. The Japanese scientists is a professor at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Tokyo and an associate professor at the Institute of Technological Sciences at Wuhan University in China and at the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA. He played a crucial role in developing image-activated cell sorting (IACS). This method uses artificial intelligence to sort and analyze cells in tiny amounts of liquid on a chip. He has also made major contributions to the development of other innovative methods for lab-on-a-chip applications. The Philipp Franz von Siebold Award will enable Keisuke Goda to spend a research period at the Biomedical Center, where he will collaborate with Nicolai Siegel (Division of Physiological Chemistry and Experimental Parasitology). Their common goal is to establish single-cell analysis with IACS in Munich and to deepen the cooperation between the Serendipity Lab coordinated by Keisuke Goda and the Cell2Cell network for young scientists led by Nicolai Siegel and Sigurd Braun.

The Philipp Franz von Siebold Award

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has been presenting the Philipp Franz von Siebold Award since 1979. Sponsored by the president of the Federal Republic of Germany, this research award recognises renowned Japanese researchers in all disciplines. The award is valued at €50,000. Award winners are also invited to conduct a research project of their choice at a research institution in Germany in cooperation with specialist colleagues there.
