The immune system of the bowel in health and disease

On 07.11.2018, the broadcast nano on 3sat explored how and why chronic inflammatory bowel diseases develop. One factor contributing to disease development are overreactions of the complex immune system of the bowel.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Brocker, head of the Institute of Immunology at the Biomedical Center, investigates the function of dendritic cells, a type of immune cells that potentially plays a role in inflammatory bowel diseases. In the broadcast, he demonstrates that the dendritic cells indeed show altered characteristics in the diseased bowel.
