"Bayern 2 Radiowissen" with Dirk Baumjohann

A podcast in the series Bayern 2 Radiowissen focuses on the function of the tonsils and associated diseases. The tonsils play an important role in the immune system. Being located in the pharynx, they act as the first barrier for viruses and bacteria entering the body through the nose or mouth. While in the past tonsillitis in children was frequently treated by excision of the tonsils, this option is nowadays only chosen in case of severe and recurrent inflammations as the important role of the tissue for the immune system has been recognized. Dr. Dirk Baumjohann, who heads a research group at the Institute for Immunology at the Biomedical Center, explains in the podcast the function of the tonsils in the immune defense in children and adults.
